Get a backbone

Dear Representative Baca:
This is the statement in the news quoting you, Rep. Baca --- I implore you to vote against this flawed bill and veiled threat against our troops.
Democrats say they hope to send Bush a new bill by the end of the week he will sign, and troops in combat will get the resources they need without disruption.
"I'm frustrated" with the war, said Rep. Joe Baca, D-Calif., a member of the Blue Dog coalition, a group of conservative Democrats. "But we realize too we have a responsibility to fund our troops and make sure they have the right equipment." (CBNNews.com http://www.cbn.com/CBNnews/162516.aspx)
Voters elected Democrats in November to show some a backbone and lead the way out of the mess in Iraq, but the supplemental bill to be voted on this week won't end the war. There are no real timelines or real accountability for the Bush administration -- just a blank check for an endless war.
A vote for this Iraq supplemental bill is a vote to continue President Bush's failed Iraq policy, and you should vote against it.
America wants an end to the war. Poll after poll has shown that Americans support a timeline to bring our troops home.
This is happening everywhere. MoveOn members in districts across the America are printing out backbones and delivering them to their representatives today. MoveOn’s 3.2 million members have spoken loud and clear – we want congress to show some backbone and end this war.
Keith Olbermann has it right, any true president would have unequivocally stated that our troops would be safe no matter what. For Congress to kowtow to this immoral threat to our troops does a great disservice to all of those in uniform and serving, including my 20-year old cousin Devin, in Fallujah right now. Cancel payments to government contractors, absolutely ensure they are safe but end our occupation and bring them home now.
"This is another stage in the sequencing of ending this war," said Pelosi, who added that September will be "the moment of truth." (Washington Post, Democrats Relent On Pullout Timetable, Wednesday, May 23, 2007; Page A01)
If this is the stance Congress is taking from the Democratic Leadership, the real moment of truth will be in the accounting of lives lost, American and Iraqi, between now and September. My cousin and tens of thousands others, are on borrowed time while the President is allowed to use their service in this game of chess. Do not play this game.
Sincerely,
Gil & Bobbi Jo Chavarria
